Commonly known as mineral spirit in countries like Canada and UK or petroleum spirit, White Spirit (as referred in UK) is basically obtained from petroleum. Notable for its high clarity level, this mineral based product is known as mineral turpentine in New Zealand and Australia. Its other names include solvent naphtha, paint thinner, Stoddard solvent, petroleum spirit and varsol. It is used as a suitable organic solvent in decoration and painting works.

White spirit contains precise amount of salicylic and aliphatic hydrocarbons (C7-C12). This versatile product is utilized as a solvent to formulate preservatives for wooden products, varnishes, aerosols, asphalt based items, paints and lacquers. It is also used as an ideal degreasing and cleaning solvent. In many countries of Western Europe, around sixty percent of total produced white spirit is required to prepare varnishes, lacquers and paints. Apart from its extensive utilization in paint production units, white spirit is needed for cleaning paint accessories like brushes post completion of painting work. Moreover, it also acts as starter fluid to ignite charcoal grill. Its other applications include elimination and cleaning remaining glue from the surface with non porous quality.

Content

White spirit contains alicyclic and aliphatic C7-C12 based hydrocarbons. The 25% content of this product is aromatic hydrocarbons (C7-C12). The general composition of petroleum spirit includes hexane aliphatic solvent, kauri-butanol of 29 value, up to 0 0.1% benzene and hydrocarbons of less than 65% or more in amount. Per ml of mineral spirit has 0.79g density and its boiling point ranges between 293 degree F (145 degree C) to 345 degree F (174 degree C).

The term ‘mineral’ in mineral turpentine or mineral spirit is used to differentiate it from distilled form of turpentine (which is a plant based resin) or distilled version of spirit (distilled from fruits and grains in their fermented form). As mineral spirit or white spirit is obtained from fossil based fuel like petroleum, so the word ‘mineral’ used in its name is not appropriate.

Types and Grades

  • White spirit is available in three grades and types. Based on its types, it can be accessed in type 1(content free from sulfur), type 2 (solvent extraction) and type 3 (hydrogenation). Procedure like hydrodesulfurization is used to determine the type of mineral spirit.
  • All its three types are of three grades that include high flash grade, regular grade and low flash grade. The grade is decided on the basis of distillation process and the quality of crude oil which is applied as starting oil.
  • Besides these, white spirit has another type which is referred as type 0. This type contains saturated form of hydrocarbons (C9-C12) and its boiling point ranges between 140 degree C to 200 degree C.
  • In 1924, researcher Lloyd E. Jackson of the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research and Atlanta based dry cleaner W.J. Stoddard formulated Stoddard solvent for the first time. It is basically a combined form of a number of hydrocarbons that contains more than 65% C10 hydrocarbons. At that time, it was utilized as a dry cleaning solvent with petroleum content of low volatile level. It started to gain popularity among dry cleaners from 1928 and gradually it became the most sought after solvent for dry cleaning work across the US till the late period of 1950.
  • Turpentine based substance sold as white spirit in the market contains a number of elements and its formulation technique may not always in sync with industry specified standards. IN United Kingdom, white spirit is composed as per the British Standard BS 245. In Germany, DIN 51632 standard is adopted for its formulation. Though turpentine is utilized commonly as cleaning medium, yet it is not preferred as paint thinning element as the duration of drying time of paint can be affected with its application because of its low volatile substances. It can be utilized for cleaning of paint brush, but it leaves oily remainder on the surfaces of heavy duty components.

Use

  • Enriched with aliphatic hydrocarbon content, White Spirit serves as a suitable solvent with mild composition and paint thinning substance. In various industries, this petroleum spirit is used as a perfect grease removal and cleaning agent for different machinery and their accessories. It is used along with cutting oil as reaming lubrication substance and for thread cutting work.
  • Paint thinner or petroleum spirit acts as the cost effective petroleum based item which is a good substitute of plant based turpentine. It is applied in paints with oil enriched content to reduce their density. It is also utilized to clean paint brushes and as suitable solvent with organic content for different purposes. The composition of mineral turpentine and turpentine is not similar. The turpentine is known for its low grade solvent based features and elements like pinene. Due to low toxic level and non flammable nature, mineral turpentine is used by artists as a good substitute of turpentine. Free from sulfur residue, mineral turpentine is capable of interacting with the pigments present in oil based paints that are popularly used by artists.
  • Earlier, mineral spirit was used as an important active ingredient to formulate Fels Naptha, a type of laundry soap. This soap was widely used to dilute stains caused by grease and oil. It was also utilized as a treatment of toxic urushiol oil present in ivy poison. This specific oil has adverse effect on human health.
  • Petroleum spirit has kerosene like unpleasant smell. The less odor variant of mineral turpentine formulated by chemical producers consists of minimal amount of short hydrocarbon with high volatile content. The mineral spirits with odor free content goes through advanced processing technique for eliminating its poisonous aromatic substances and this version of mineral spirit is used to prepare oil based paint which is safe for human contact.
  • In silk screening or screen printing work, mineral spirit is required for cleaning or removal of deposited substances from screens. These screens are utilized for printing by using plastisol and textile inks with oil based content.
  • One can notice the presence of mineral spirits at the inner parts of liquid filled gauges and compasses.
  • White spirit is also required for gripping golf clubs after removal of their former grip. Newly obtained grip of golf club is shaken after applying petroleum spirit on it to bond the grip with the tape beneath. One can use the golf club after an hour after drying of applied mineral spirit.
  • Mineral spirit can also be used as a substitute of fuels like kerosene for easy to carry stoves, though it is not sold as combustible item. It is the lighter version of kerosene. It is not suitable to be used as a replacement of highly volatile white gas just like gasoline based fuel.
  • Mineral spirit is used as one of the basic elements for various oil additives and automotive grade fuels like Marvel Mystery Oil which is used for diluting accumulated sludge and varnish.
  • White spirit acts as a suitable lubricant and coolant for diamond turning machinery or ultraprecision lathes.

Toxicity

Mineral spirit has several adverse effects on human health. The inhalation of its toxic vapor content has negative impact on ingestion and skin. Its prolonged exposure can harm functioning of tissues of central nervous system and can lead to depression via slowing down normal functioning and degrading coordination level among various organs. Too much exposure of mineral spirit may cause narcotic symptoms like dizziness, drowsy feeling and vomiting to name a few. It may even lead to senselessness. Oral consumption of white spirit may cause severe health hazards. Its continuous exposure to skin can cause skin irritations like contact dermatitis or dermatitis. Its direct subjection to skin for prolonged period may lead to critical chemical burns. It is advised to wear gloves during its handling and to wash hands thoroughly after its usage to avoid any type of health hazard. Its casual contact with skin does not cause any health complication.

Average subjection of 40ppm or 240mg/m3 mineral spirit for above thirteen years may cause acute complications in central nervous system of human body. Exposure to petroleum spirit causes diseases like chromic toxic encephalopathy among persons engaged in painting houses.

Due to its active effect on human body and high volatile content, mineral spirit has adverse effect on the environment as its presence harms organisms found in water bodies. It is advised not to apply it on drinking water pipelines or sink connected to drainage system.

One can come in contact with mineral spirit in his/her working environment by exposure to skin or to eyes or by ingestion or by inhaling. As per the allowable limit of its exposure of the Occupational Safety and health Administration which is better known as OSHA, the ideal exposure limit of white spirit is 2900 mg/m3 or 500 ppm in any workplaces with more than eight hours of workday. As per the acceptable exposure limit of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health or NIOSH, this limit is 350 mg/m3 in workplaces where the work day exceeds eight hours and 1800 mg/m3 in workplaces of having 15 minutes extra work day than normal eight hours of work routine. Exposure to 20,000mg/m3 mineral spirit can cause serious health complications that can even lead to death.

White spirit is notable for its water like color. It does not cause corrosion and it has stable chemical properties. It is required for polishing floor, furniture and shoes. As a suitable degreaser, it is required for cleaning of metals. It is the outcome of the synthesis among various synthetic hydrocarbons conducted in petroleum refineries.
